I want to share with you the story of a dog helped by BARCS animal shelter, an organization close to my heart. This is Henrietta.
Earlier this year, a landlord in Baltimore City found his property filled with mounds of trash and filth and the tenant was nowhere to be found. Amongst the piles of debris, he heard the sound of a whimpering animal, but couldn't locate it. He called 311 for help, cautious of what he might find. When Baltimore City Animal Control arrived, they helped dig through the mounds of debris and refuse, following the sounds of the cries.
Underneath a panel, they found Henrietta and just a bowl of water, thrown away just like the trash piled on top of her. Skin, bones and too weak to walk, she was scooped up and brought straight to BARCS. While she looked like she was too far gone, she showed the team at BARCS that she still had hope by wagging her tail at human contact.
At the time, Henrietta weighed just 12 pounds, but should have been between 30 - 40 pounds for her size. Henrietta was only at BARCS briefly before being rushed to a partnering ER clinic, where she stayed for an extended period of time, fighting every day for her life.
It took a lot of medical care, time and love, but she made it. Here is a before and after photo to show her transformation.
Henrietta is just one of the 12,000 homeless animals that enter BARCS each year. BARCS is an open-admission shelter, meaning no animal is ever turned away--no matter what their circumstance or condition. Most animals brought to BARCS are in need of additional medical attention, which is why donations to BARCStoberfest are so important.
I'm participating in BARCStoberfest this year because I believe in giving second chances to animals like Henrietta. I'm asking my friends to consider making a donation to my page. BARCS is the largest animal shelter in Maryland and they need your help to keep saving lives. Thank you!
