I want to share with you the story of a kitten helped by BARCS animal shelter, an organization close to my heart. This is Beyonce
Little Beyonce came to BARCS in very poor shape. A good Samaritan found her and could tell immediately that she was very sick. It was the dead of winter, and Beyonce was thin, coughing, and had very infected eyes. With good intentions, but not understanding the negative effects, the finder gave her human cough syrup before bringing her to our shelter.
When she arrived, she was only a pound. BARCS' veterinary team immediately jumped into action, examining her, checking her levels, getting her on medication for her severe upper respiratory infection and coaxing her to eat. She was also very, very scared and was choosing to sleep in her litter box.
BARCS knew that the best place for her to recover would be a home setting, and so after a week of careful monitoring at the shelter, she went to stay with Lindsey M., an experienced BARCS foster volunteer. For four months, Lindsey cared for Beyonce and brought her back and forth to BARCS for weekly check-ups. Beyonce also had appointments with a veterinary ophthalmologist to check on damage to her eyes from her pre-shelter illnesses. Luckily, she was able to keep both of her beautiful eyes.
BARCS and foster mom Lindsey cared for Beyonce from March until July, when she was finally healthy enough to find a forever home. I am happy to report that she was adopted quickly to a great family and has a French Bulldog brother.
Beyonce is just one of the 12,000 homeless animals that enter BARCS each year. BARCS is an open-admission shelter, meaning no animal is ever turned away--no matter what their circumstance or condition. Most animals brought to BARCS are in need of additional medical attention, which is why donations to BARCStoberfest are so important.
I'm participating in BARCStoberfest this year because I believe in giving second chances to animals like Beyonce. I'm asking my friends to consider making a donation to my personal fundraising page: BARCS is the largest animal shelter in Maryland and they need your help to keep saving lives. Thank you!
